Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Review and Swatches

Good news pigment lovers! Maybelline has expanded its Color Tattoo line and introduced the Color Tattoo Pure Pigments for summer 2013 (is that cheering I hear?!). 

I have been a huge fan of Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eyeshadows since day 1 (which are amazeballs! Truly one of my makeup bag must-have. I have already repurchased Bad to the Bronze, my favourite of the bunch...so far! Just bought three of the new LE summer shades....stay tuned for swatches), so I couldn't wait to see if these pigments truly were Color Tattoo line worthy. 

First, let's take a look at what the Maybelline's website tells us:

Double-dipped pigments create intense eyeshadow colour intensity. Superior staying power (up to 24 hr), for crease-proof wear all day long. Explosive pure pigments in a crease-proof formula.

Wear time : Granted, I always take off my makeup at night, so I can't really comment on their 24 hr claim, but happy to report that they do last 10hr + (all day wear for me) worn with eye primer or over a Color Tattoo cream eyeshadow. 

Formula : Pigmentation rocks for most shades. A shame that the line didn't include more matte shades (I think the only semi-matte shade is the royal blue one called Brash Blue). Some shades are rather sheer (for example, there is nothing potent about Potent Purple worn on its own, and Buff & Tuff is just chunky glitter in a very sheer nude shade), but for the most part, pigmentation is great and colours are fun and vibrant. 

I did play around with them a lot before writing this and, even though the sheerness of a few had left me bummed out, I was happy to see that they looked a lot better over a cream eyeshadow or applied wet vs dry (HUGE difference in colour payoff!).

On to swatches! I have received 4 for review and bought 2 more shades.

Verdict:


Even though not all shades wowed me (I'd skip Buff & Tuff), I still think these are definitely worth adding to your makeup bag if you love pigments (Never Fade Jade will be a definite must for Fall, you can even use it as a liner with a little bit of mixing medium). At the budget friendly price of $8.99 CAD, these are a great bang for your buck.

Pigment Pressing 101

Here is my "pressed pigments" palette (the purple shade on the top right is Violet by MAC and well loved as you can see from the marks on the pan LOL). It's a MAC 15 pan pro palette. I love the texture/shimmery quality of pigments but I make a terrible mess when using them. It falls all over the place. Who wants to have to clean up their dresser top each time they apply their makeup? Not me for sure. I had to find a way to make my pigments more user friendly...or more Mel friendly should I say. :)

Voilà ma palette de pigments pressés (la teinte de mauve dans le coin droit en haut est Violet de MAC et je l'adore comme vous pouvez le voir par les traits multiples de pinceau sur la surface). C'est une palette pro-15 de MAC. J'adore la texture et la qualité scintillante des pigments mais je fais un bordel terrible à chaque fois que je les utilise. Il y en a partout! Qui veut avoir à nettoyer le dessus de sa vanité à chaque fois qu'elle fait son maquillage? Pas moi c'est certain! Je devais donc trouver un moyen de rendre mes pigments davantage ''user-friendly'' ou ''Mel friendly'' devrais-je dire. ;) 

What I do is purchase empty alum. pans. You can get these from Coastal Scents or ebay.  And you need an empty palette. May it be an Annabelle quad,  a Z-palette, a MAC one (they have quads or 15 pan palettes) or a generic one you can purchase from the internet. Many sites offer them including Coastal Scents. I like that site because they offer USPS first class international mail...which is a lot cheaper for us in Canada. It also gets here quick.

Ce que je fais, c'est que j'achète des petites pastilles d'aluminium vides. Vous pouvez les acheter enligne d'un site comme Coastal Scents ou encore sur ebay. Et vous avez besoin d'une palette vide. Que ce soit un quatuor d'Annabelle, une Z-palette, une de MAC ou encore toute autre que vous pouvez vous procurer à différents endroits enligne (tel Coastal Scents, ebay or autre site semblable). J'aime bien le site CS personellement car ils offrent USPS FCI mail ce qui est moins cher et arrive assez rapidement à votre porte pour celles au Canada.

It's so easy to do and makes carrying around your favorite pigments easier. I also find that you get less fallout when you use pressed pigments instead of loose ones straight from the jar.

C'est tellement facile à faire et rend le trimbalage de vos pigments favoris tellement moins encombrant. Je trouve également que le problème de ''fallout'' n'est pas aussi important avec des pigments pressés comparativement à des pigments en poudre.
